Presentation of the association
The Zentralverband Naturdarm e.V. (ZVN) is representing the interests of German companies trading in and processing natural casings since 1947. The activities of the association are focussed on the protection of quality advantages of high-quality natural casings and the absolute food safety of the refined raw material. The German trade in natural casings grew to a modern branch of the food economy within the past decades – inter alia with the development and the consequent implementation of exemplary quality management and HACCP concepts. The association further focuses on the cooperation with organisations and associations of business partners of the trade in natural casings in trade and industry.
The Zentralverband Naturdarm e.V. has presently 30 members which employ a staff of about 6.000 persons in Germany and abroad. All processing companies (without exceptions) dispose of the EU approval with corresponding EV number which is indicated with each delivery of goods and which assures the clear identification of the respective natural casings company.
On 1 January 2006, the Waren-Verein der Hamburger Börse e.V. took over the management of the Zentralverband Naturdarm e.V. The executive director is Dr. Helena Melnikov. The Waren-Verein der Hamburger Börse e.V. is a trade association at federal level for the wholesale and export trade.
Today, Germany is considered being a platform for the international trade in natural casings. In 2004, about 50.000 tons of natural casings with a total value of about 326 million euros were imported to Germany. Round about 61 per cent of the imported goods came from non-EU countries. The biggest part of imports came with 10.396 tons (21 per cent of the total imports) from Brazil, followed by China with 8.202 tons (17 per cent). About five per cent of the imported natural casings came from the Middle East (Iran, Syria and Lebanon), four per cent from Turkey, two per cent from Australia and two per cent from New Zealand. The total value of imported goods amounted to approx. 191 million euros. Thus more than half of the total imports value and nearly one half of the imported goods results of the trade with these eight countries.
The total revenue of the foreign trade of the German natural casings industry was 547 million euros in 2004. 221 million euros thereof account for exports.
The basis of the economic success of the sector is the consequent and “thoughtful” customer orientation. It is not only restricted to individually tailored delivery offers and times. The high market share of natural casings is also based upon different product innovations of the natural casing companies facilitating the handling of the natural casings (even for unskilled staff), minimising the time needed for processing and rendering high production performances possible.
